Despite the threat of wildfire smoke and oppressive heat waves, these camps are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of their campers.

They are conserving the summer camp tradition and bringing up a new generation of environmentally conscientious individuals by implementing cutting-edge methods and encouraging environmental consciousness.

In Ontario and Alberta, camp administrators say they are dedicated to maintaining the core values of camp, including meeting friends while canoeing or unwinding by the fire.

But in order to keep youngsters content and safe, such activities could look different.

"We've sent N-95 masks on a lot of our longer out trips, especially in Algonquin Park," Andrea Lewis said, in case they come across more wildfire smoke.

She is a certified nurse who serves as the health coordinator at Camp Kawartha.

From Toronto, the camp is situated around 170 kilometers to the east.

In addition, air conditioning has been added to Camp Kawartha's cabins, shielding kids from the sun from midday to 2:30 p.m.

She said, "Speaking from Toronto, staff has started scheduling more times for campers to jump into the lake."
