Severe floods triggered by torrential rains have devastated Thailand and Malaysia, killing over 30 people, according to official sources on Tuesday, December 3.

In Malaysia, severe rains along the east coast last week matched averages over six months, causing massive devastation in Kelantan and Terengganu. Floodwaters have flooded crops, wrecked roads and houses, and displaced tens of thousands of people.

Although the rain abated over the weekend, officials in both nations are bracing for further flooding as another monsoon surge began on Sunday, December 1. Malaysia is expected to get heavy rains through Tuesday.

Over 534 000 homes were impacted, necessitating the closure of several schools and 98 medical institutions. As of Monday, December 2, 34,354 evacuees were accommodated in 491 government shelters.

While water levels have subsided in some locations, Thai authorities have issued warnings of further heavy rains through Thursday, heightening worries about flash floods.
